I just climbed the Great Wall of China!

Thursday, August 6, 2009

Wow. That is all I can say. We are sitting at the bottom of the great wall. Our hike was nothing like I thought it would be. The rough terrian was never flat. It felt as if we were always climbing up. At a few points on the wall we had to scale it. We were climbing the bricks and pulling ourselves up with no harnessess. It was insane. But so awesome! The hike lasted for 7 hours and at the end there was a huge banner saying "one is not a hero until he (OR SHE) climbs the great wall". We were so excited and we got to sign and take pictures with the banner. That was a once in a lifetime experience and just looking out at mountain after mountain was unbelievably unreal.

To have hiked the Great Wall is a memory you will always carry with you. No doubt, you will find yourself sharing it over and over with your friends and family. Don't be too surprised if they can't imagine how it felt. It is really one of those times when "you had to have been there." I'm glad I was able to share in some of the excitement. Seven hours, constantly pulling upward, no harnesses--scary thought--but you did it. I read all the blogs, and I noticed that the girls are more honest about the fear factor, and your description of how hard this climb really was is excellent You must feel very proud of your accomplishment; I suspect it is something that will remain with you for the rest of your life. So if ever you doubt yourself in the future, think China Wall, The Great Wall, and you will get over whatever obstacle in literally or physically in your way. You now know you can do ANYTHING.
