Paper cutting

Saturday, August 8, 2009

Today we were fortunate enough to go to a beautiful paper art gallery run by a large family in chengde. The gallery displayed hundreds of intricately cut paper designs. Some were very bright colored and some solid. More mature designs but all were absolutely gorgeous.
We learned that the women of the families usually take part in paper cutting because they are much more patient then the men. Nice!
We watched one woman cut a pretty butterfly and she showed us a few of her past designs. The were unreal. She let us try cutting easy little butterflys and even those were difficult. I bought three paper designs from the gallery and I can't wait to show everyone at home how beautiful they are!

Patience really is a virtue, isn't it? I think I will go google paper cutting and see some examples of what you guys are talking about. Karen Wells DSA South Africa

What a fabulous opportunity you have had. Interesting that women are the artists because they have the patience required for the art. I am beginning to think that you would have to have a large spending budget in China; everything is so beautiful and you would want to bring back a sample of everything. At some point, I would love to see a photograph of your treasured purchases.

Enjoy the trip; it seems incomparable to anything else (except another Discovery trip).
